With the Navaratri’s the fasting season is back again. While most of us will agree that this is the season to eat healthy, most of the usual navaratri food we eat is really fattening with one typical Navaratri meal racking up to a whopping 1200 calories!

Let’s take a leaf out of our beloved PM Shree Narendra Modi’s book this Navaratri to follow a healthy and simple yet delicious diet. Here are some of his favorite dishes that are just right this festive season. If you are bored from the usual navaratri food and want something new try these. You can easily customize these to use ingredients as per your navaratri beliefs..

White Khatta Dhokla
Khatta Dhokla is a Gujarati Snack. It is prepared from fermented and steamed rice, close to south Indian dish Idli. It is light, spongy, bit sour, and pampered with mustard and cumin seeds and lightly spiced with sesame seeds, green chilies and and ginger. Generally served with sweet and hot chutney.

Khandavi is popular, mouth watering, traditional, guilt free, authentic snack from Gujarat. Main ingredients are gram flour and curd. The khandavi rolls are tempered with cumin seeds, asafoetida, sesame seeds, mustered seeds, curry leaves, chilies, and sprinkled with coconut, coriander, cumin seeds. It is said that it is little difficult item to prepare. It requires lots of patience to be perfected.


Surti Undhiyu
Surti Undhiyu, a traditional Gujarati Dish, is originated from the city of Surat in Gujarat. Undhiyu is made of mix of vegetables and fenugreek dumpling (called Muthia) cooked with traditional Indian herbs and spices. This dish is prepared in winter, as the vegetables used in are seasonal. Generally served with phulkas or puris and some sweet dish jalebi or shrikhand.


Shrikhand With Dry Fruits
Shrikhand is very common, yogurt based sweet and sour desert dish, quite popular in Gujarati and Maharashtrian cuisine. It is made of yogurt that is strained through cloth and then mixed with sugar powder and saffron. It also can be mixed with different fruits and garnished with choice of dry fruits.


Sweet Mango Chutney
Sweet Mango Chutney is very special of all the Chutneys. Almost ripe and raw mangoes are diced into pieces and simmered in sugar syrup with certain spices such as garlic, cloves, bay leaf, peppercorn, fennel seeds, and red chili powder.  Generally served with a meal as an accompaniment.


Vaghareli Khichdi
Khichdi, made of rice and lentil, is very healthy and nutritious meal, believed to be a comfort food. Vaghareli Khichdi is also called masala khichdi, spiced up with few spices and the choice of vegetables. It’s light, satisfying, and so comforting that nothing can be matched with it. It is generally served with simple kadhi.


But, If you are fasting here are some useful tips for you

Water should be your best friend. Have as much of it as possible. Maybe even a little more than what your intake would be on regular days. In addition, load up on fluids like milk and fresh fruit juices.

Fasting is not easy and long gaps between meals could lead to acidity. This may not work well for your metabolism.Small, frequent meals should be the rule.

You are allowed to indulge in yoghurt or raita that has a soothing effect on the body and will help to cool you down. Add a bowl to each meal and make sure you stay refreshed

It’s a good idea to switch from frying to techniques like steaming, grilling or baking and keep that guilt at bay.

And lastly it is critical that you do not starve yourself and create a balance. Don’t give up on your favorites or skip meals, but find healthy substitutes. You must ensure that you get all the nutrition that you need.
